The brewery

In the early 1900s Gullegem was a town with its own malt house and brewery, called St-Antoine.
Kamiel Vandamme was there employed as wel as in brewery St Maarten from the region. After more than 100 years the brewing genes are still in the blood.

In June 1983 the descendants founded a beer restaurant in the ancestral homestead, called ’t Rusteel. In the beginning 300 different beers were served along with many snacks and a good sandwich. This concept quickly became a real trend in the region.

The passion for beer brewing was really in the blood, in 1985, with the help of a friendly brewery, the first self-brewed beer was a fact; Vlaskapelle, brewed with deep smoked whiskey malt. Another two years later, the Netebuk was brewed according to an ancient legend and the rules of the real seasonal beer.

Over the years, the passion grew and it became a real refined restaurant with a brewery! In 2001, the first home-brewed test gallons flowed out from our own installation. Not even two years later a complete brewhouse with fermenters was purchased. The mash tank could filter a volume of 700L and the boiling kettle was 500L.
Brewery ’t Brouwkot was born!

The growth of the brewery was possible through the help of student workers, specifically for 2 of them. Meanwhile they are married, Kim as genetic engineer and Björn as automation specialist made the brewery grow. The son of the owners from restaurant ’t Rusteel grew up in the entire history of beer and also works as a Biotechnologist in the brewery and bottling plant.

In 2007, the current installation was purchased. It can produce a maximum of 1200L, by this development the name changed into Brewery GULDEN SPOOR.
The passion, determination and love for the craft created many changes: in the meantime, the installation is optimized to brew two times a day.

Since 2013, the entire plant moved to an ultra-modern building where the latest brewing techniques are possible. The storage has gone from 60hl to 285hl, with the ability to further expand out! A new bottling plant was purchased in September 2014. The machine can rotate 6,000 bottles per hour and has the ability to handle all the bottles as well as bottle caps and corks with wire basket. Plans for a fully automatic brewing installation of 40HL are also running.

The constant striving for improvement streams in our blood and that makes us a leader!
